Health secretary Andrew Lansley has launched a call for new ideas for health apps that would help patients make informed decisions about their care.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley launched a call for new ideas for health apps that would help patients make informed decisions about their care.

Everyone, including patients, doctors, nurses and other health professionals and app developers, is invited to submit new ideas of health apps and online maps they think would be useful.

For the next six weeks, people can visit maps and apps and suggest favourite apps, ideas for apps or health maps they would like to see, as well as vote for their favourite ideas submitted by others.

In the video below Dr Shaibal Roy explains more about apps and how you can get involved.

The call for ideas, suggestions and votes for apps or health maps come under one of these five themes:

Personalisation and choice of care and support: for example, an app that allows a user to search for health information online

Better health and care outcomes: for example, an app that allows a patient to manage their health condition

Autonomy and accountability: for example, an app that allows patients to publicly rate and review their local health services

Improving public health: for example, an app that tracks an individual’s levels of exercise

Improving long-term care and support: for example, an app that helps with planning long-term care and support

Examples of existing apps that benefits patients include:

Choosing Well app from NHS Yorkshire and Humber, gives addresses of the nearest NHS services

Paediatric Emergency Drugs app developed by Evelina Children’s Hospital helps calculate correct medicine dosage;

iBreastCheck, Breakthrough Breast Cancer – gives information about checking breasts for abnormalities;

MicroGuide, NHS Southampton – gives practical support to clinicians when treating patients with infections;

The arrival of App Inventor from Google promises to put us back in control of the apps on our phones and may force our hands on the iPhone vs Droid phone debate.

Android smartphone users now have a software tool designed to help them to create their own apps. App Inventor is designed for use by non-programmers, using a simple menu and a drag-and-drop interface.

Google says,

“You can build just about any app you can imagine with App Inventor … To use App Inventor, you do not need to be a developer. App Inventor requires NO programming knowledge. This is because instead of writing code, you visually design the way the app looks and use blocks to specify the app’s behavior.”

Well the Surepoint team have signed up to roadtest App Inventor and we’ll be reporting back on what we found very soon.

This 60-second video gives you a flavour of how quick and easy it is to build an app for your phone.

The Department of Health recently published the white paper ‘Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS’. Under the new plans, groups of GPs will be given freedom and responsibility for commissioning care for their local communities. Providers of services will have new freedoms and they will be more accountable. There will be greater competition in the NHS and greater cooperation. Services will be more joined up, supported by a new role for Local Authorities to support integration across health and social care.

This radical shake up of the NHS will impact on many Surepoint clients. To help us make sense of this we have tried to capture the new landscape in the mindmap below. There’s an expadable / collapsible version in the Mindjet Player window and a fully expanded version in the Scribd window.

I came across some interesting applications to analyze the content of the tweets using common #tags

Here at Surepoint we are going to continue to research this area. In the meatime do let us know if you have used or developed applications for analysing tweets based on common #tags.

Many people I have encountered who use YouTube to share videos remain unaware of the analytics capabilities now available c/o Google.

Many people I have encountered who use YouTube to share videos remain unaware of the analytics capabilities now available c/o Google. Tracking performance is no longer limited to how many times a video is viewed or commented on.

How to access the statistics and data

Visit a video on YouTube e.g. NHS Choices Chage4life video

If the owner of the video has chosen to make the statistics and data public you will see a link to Statistics & Data. This will reveal data such as below

However as the owner of a video you get to dig even deeper into the statistics and data. Click on the link to More Insight Statistics

This will load the screen below which gives you access to detailed reporting with adjustable time range selection. This offers a whole range of reporting tools including:

A chart of views over time

Demographics information about who is watching the video

A visual color coded map showing the countries your video was viewed in

The popularity of the video relative to those of other uploaders
